Summary

Two best friends。 Ten summer trips。 One last chance to fall in love。

From the New York Times bestselling author of Beach Read, a sparkling new novel that will leave you with the warm, hazy afterglow usually reserved for the best vacations。

Poppy and Alex。 Alex and Poppy。 They have nothing in common。 She’s a wild child; he wears khakis。 She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book。 And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends。 For most of the year they live far apart—she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown—but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together。

Until two years ago, when they ruined everything。 They haven’t spoken since。

Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut。 When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex。 And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together—lay everything on the table, make it all right。 Miraculously, he agrees。

Now she has a week to fix everything。 If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship。 What could possibly go wrong?

Poppy Wright has always been a restless soul。 She wanted to experience everything the world had to offer。 As long as it was far, far away from her hometown of Linfield, Ohio。So as fate would have it, on her very first day of college, she meets the boy who is not only going to show her what the word “home” really means – he’s also going to redefine everything she knows about love。“You know, my therapist says—”“Your mom,” I say。“She was being a therapist when she said this,” Rachel argues, by whic Poppy Wright has always been a restless soul。 She wanted to experience everything the world had to offer。 As long as it was far, far away from her hometown of Linfield, Ohio。So as fate would have it, on her very first day of college, she meets the boy who is not only going to show her what the word “home” really means – he’s also going to redefine everything she knows about love。“You know, my therapist says—”“Your mom,” I say。“She was being a therapist when she said this,” Rachel argues, by which I know she means, Sandra Krohn was being decidedly Dr。 Sandra Krohn, in the same way that Rachel is sometimes decidedly Art School Rachel, not that Rachel was actually in a therapy session。 Beg as Rachel might, her mother refuses to treat Rachel as a patient。 Rachel, however, refuses to see anyone else, and so they remain at an impasse。“Anyway,” Rachel continues, “she told me that sometimes, when you lose your happiness, it’s best to look for it the same way you’d look for anything else。”“By groaning and hurling couch cushions around?” I guess。“By retracing your steps,” Rachel says。 “So, Poppy, all you have to do is think back and ask yourself, when was the last time you were truly happy?”The problem is, I don’t have to think back。 Not at all。I know right away when I was last truly happy。Two years ago, in Croatia, with Alex Nilsen。Alex Nilsen has been painfully responsible from a very young age。 After losing his mother, he stepped in as the caregiver for both his distraught father and his younger siblings。His life is planned。 Go to college。 Come back to Linfield。 Get a job。 Have a family。 Live happily ever after。 He never counted on a best friend like Poppy - with her outlandish clothes and ceaseless wanderlust – to wedge herself so deep in his heart that he can’t imagine his life without her。When the line of friendship crosses into something much more, will they risk everything to make love last long after vacation is over? And here it comes, the moment that keeps slipping through my fingers, like it’s the game-changing detail in an instant replay I can’t seem to pause or slow down。We are just looking at each other。 There are no hard edges to grab hold of, no distinct markers on this moment’s beginning or end, nothing to separate it from the millions just like it。But this, this is the moment I first think it。I am in love with you。The thought is terrifying, probably not even true。 A dangerous idea to entertain。 I release my hold on it, watch it slip away。But there are points in the center of my palms that burn, scorched, proof I once held it there。I’ve been a fan of Emily Henry ever since being swept away by A Million Junes。 With each subsequent new release, I was left thinking that there was no way that she could top it。 Well, with People We Meet on Vacation, she has proved me wrong in the very best way!Her characters are uniquely complex。 Poppy shines with her wicked sense of humor and heartbreaking insecurity。 While Alex smolders with his quiet strength and longing。 They made me giggle, made me swoon and made me never want to visit Palm Springs in the summer。 It’s a soulful love story intertwined with a favorite travel guide。 And I loved every moment of it… 。。。more

Mature, cute, and overall a great time。 I think the initial issue could have been expanded on and explained more in depth but I really enjoyed it and this book got me out of a reading slump。 This book is funny, like laugh out loud funny and so spot on with how 30 somethings act and feel。 I would definitely recommend!

"I don’t know how to love someone as much as I love you。”Stop what you’re doing and grab this book!!! You’ll love it! Our hearts are overflowing with love –we could sit and re-read this book all over again。 It was beautiful, magical, funny, sincere, and written to perfection! People We Meet on Vacation is, without a doubt, one of the best friends to lovers romances we’ve ever read。 Not only that, it’s one of our top reads this year。 Absolutely bloody brilliant! A funny and heartfelt emotion fest。 You’ll need tissues! “You won’t lose me。” He says。 “As long as you want me, I’m here。”Responsible for one of our favourites last year with Beach Read, Emily Henry has solidified herself as a 1Click author to us。 In fact, we’re already stalking her to see what she’s up to next!‘I want him to remember。 I want every moment to matter as much to him as it has to me。’From start to finish, this book wowed us。 We never wavered in our love for the characters and the story。 The banter was on point – we were constantly giggling and grinning like fools。 Alex’s sense of humour was so dry – half the time he was witty without even realising it。 Poppy, his snarky funny as hell bestie, kept us on our toes and in fits with her sharp humour。The chemistry, the characters, the joy, the sadness, and the ever-flowing emotions hit every part of our hearts。 We loved it all! Everything about this story worked on every level。 When done right, the friends to lovers’ trope is all-consuming。 When you experience the undercurrent of feelings between two people teetering on the brink of taking a chance at love or remaining friends, you are taken through a gamut of emotions, and Emily Henry nailed it magnificently! “…sometimes, when you lose your happiness, it’s best to look for it the same way you’d look for anything else。”Told over twelve years, we are there as a friendship develops between the sweet and stoic Alex Nilsen and the forthright and flighty Poppy Wright。 Despite the odds, and with not a lot in common, Alex and Poppy become best friends。 We then spend every summer with them as they navigate their lives through many ups and downs。 Broken hearts, insecurities – all their highlights and lowlights were laid bare。 We laughed, we cried, and we fell completely in love with their friendship。‘He is tall, quiet, and eager to see the library。 I’m short, loud, and hoping someone comes by and invites us to a real party。’Alex was a contradiction who completely stole our hearts。 A character such as Alex is quite difficult to write – there is a fine line between making him a pushover against Poppy’s strong personality or a little belligerent, but Emily Henry wrote him to perfection! Just wait until you meet Alex! He’s definitely on the list of top book boyfriends!‘Years of undying love, occasional jealousy, missed opportunities, bad timing, other relationships, building sexual tension, a fight and the silence afterward, and the pain of living life without him。’Somewhere along the lines, their friendship fell apart two years previously whilst on a vacation in Croatia。 What happened to put such a strain on their friendship that they would go nearly two years without communicating? We switch from past to present as the story builds to that moment。 “I don’t think I knew I was lonely until I met you。”Just how do we tell you how special this book is? It’s complex and layered – it’s everything you could ask for in a romance。 All we can do is tell you to grab this book and find out for yourself。 We’re confident your heart will be bursting with love and it will become a favourite for you too!Available to purchase belowAmazon USAmazon UKCome and say hi, at:✲ TotallyBookedBlog✲ TBB on Facebook✲ TBB on Instagram✲ TBB on Twitter✲ TBB on Pinterest 。。。more

This one gave me allll the When Harry Met Sally and Love and Other Words vibes (if you know me, you know this is the highest of high compliments!)。 I loved this one even more than Emily’s first novel, Beach Read, which I didn’t think was possible。 Turns out I’m just a sucker for the friends-for-10-years-to-lovers trope。 If you are too, you’re going to love this one。The story time hops between past summer vacations and the present。 The dual timeline can be iffy, but Emily executes it flawlessly a This one gave me allll the When Harry Met Sally and Love and Other Words vibes (if you know me, you know this is the highest of high compliments!)。 I loved this one even more than Emily’s first novel, Beach Read, which I didn’t think was possible。 Turns out I’m just a sucker for the friends-for-10-years-to-lovers trope。 If you are too, you’re going to love this one。The story time hops between past summer vacations and the present。 The dual timeline can be iffy, but Emily executes it flawlessly and without confusing the reader。 I loved watching Alex and Poppy grow and change and learn who they are both separately and together。 Seeing their relationship develop over the course of ten summers, while simultaneously understanding where they’ve ended up, is so rewarding。 Speaking of Poppy and Alex, these two are fun and relatable but also aspirational characters。 Who doesn’t love fast friends who are nothing alike but still manage to love (and like) each other!I HIGHLY recommend People We Meet on Vacation to all romance/beach read lovers, but it’s a MUST READ for people who like the friends-to-lovers trope, When Harry Met Sally, and/or Love and Other Words。*Thank you to @berkleypub for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

You and Me on Vacation (also known as People We Meet on Vacation) is the latest adult novel from Emily Henry and it is an excellent friends to lovers romance (with a hint of sick bed scene and only one bed)! The synopsis is widely available, but briefly this book follows close friends Poppy and Alex who live apart from each other but go on one big holiday each year, until there was a big falling out two years earlier- in Croatia。I loved this book and I absolutely flew through it。 Their story and You and Me on Vacation (also known as People We Meet on Vacation) is the latest adult novel from Emily Henry and it is an excellent friends to lovers romance (with a hint of sick bed scene and only one bed)! The synopsis is widely available, but briefly this book follows close friends Poppy and Alex who live apart from each other but go on one big holiday each year, until there was a big falling out two years earlier- in Croatia。I loved this book and I absolutely flew through it。 Their story and friendship is shown through a duel timeline- present day (without Covid) and with flashbacks to their earlier holidays leading up to the big fall out。 I always enjoy reading duel timelines and I thought it was done very well here。 Even though there were many different events/holidays covered, it was easy to follow and each trip added more facets to their character and a greater insight into them as people。 I enjoyed seeing how different Poppy and Alex were to each other whilst still having such a strong connection and I also loved that we got to learn about Poppy and Alex as friends rather than just ‘will they/won’t they’。 In this case the slow-burn of their romance worked really well as the chemistry was there all along and didn’t feel forced。Overall, I just really enjoyed this book and I thought it was a great read!Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin for my advanced copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry really struck a cord with me。 I’m one of a zillion people who obviously loved this book and I can totally see why。 The characters are funny and relatable。 The story is fast paced and fresh。 I really loved how the author assigned each chapter to a different summer in their 12 year friendship and how she kept coming back to the present so that the reader could understand their slow build romance and how deeply everything is felt, how much they could risk, People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry really struck a cord with me。 I’m one of a zillion people who obviously loved this book and I can totally see why。 The characters are funny and relatable。 The story is fast paced and fresh。 I really loved how the author assigned each chapter to a different summer in their 12 year friendship and how she kept coming back to the present so that the reader could understand their slow build romance and how deeply everything is felt, how much they could risk, and how scary change can be。 Alex and Poppy meet during some college orientation event and although that was a very brief meet cute it had a lasting impact。 The entire story is told from Poppy’s POV so you are totally in her head about everything and that slow build of anxiety when she has no idea what Alex is thinking is so fun。 At the end of their first year in college, they road trip back home to Ohio together which is where they really begin to get to know one another。 My absolute favorite movie is When Harry Met Sally so my rom-com loving radar went off immediately and then I started picking up all the amazing callbacks to the movie that I adore so much。 Some of the callbacks were barely noticeable and others were hilariously epically in your face。 In the book, Poppy is the more chaotic “Harry” type character and Alex is the more controlled, and goal oriented “Sally” character。 So although there are a lot of these awesome callbacks this story is entirely it’s own, and completely different but the awesome vibe is there。 The point is if you love that movie, you will love this book and if you haven’t seen that movie, this is the time to do that。 So, I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves best friends to lovers, slow burn romance, big feelings, and When Harry Met Sally。 Also if you just want to swoon over every epic vacation Alex and Poppy ever took。 。。。more

I think I squealed when I was notified that this book had FINALLY landed in my kindle library。 I think I've spent the last week going back and forth and checking and re-checking the release date, hoping it had somehow been moved back。 This book was everything I wanted and more。 Henry writes in a way that leaves you wanting。 Her characters are breathtaking and multifaceted, real people。 Poppy and Alex had me speeding through this book like my house would burn if I didn't finish it fast enough。 An I think I squealed when I was notified that this book had FINALLY landed in my kindle library。 I think I've spent the last week going back and forth and checking and re-checking the release date, hoping it had somehow been moved back。 This book was everything I wanted and more。 Henry writes in a way that leaves you wanting。 Her characters are breathtaking and multifaceted, real people。 Poppy and Alex had me speeding through this book like my house would burn if I didn't finish it fast enough。 And I know, for a fact, I'll definitely be reading this again and again, because once just wasn't enough。Alex was a dream。 He was everything wonderful all wrapped up in one neat package, corners smoothed to perfection。 He had a softness about him that's hard to come by, in characters and in life。 He was buttery and warm and sweet and perfect。 And Poppy, like all of Henry's characters was somehow a window to my soul。 Her thoughts brought on a toe-curling sense of Deja Vu。 Millennial Ennui。 Because somehow every time I read Henry's books I'm pulled in not just by the story itself but also the bigger picture。 The subtle comments on all the things going on around us。 After turning the last page, I couldn't help but feel a sense of restlessness take over。 Because I know it won't be long before I pick this up and read it again。 I have an overwhelming feeling that this will be my top pick for 2021。 。。。more

I really enjoyed Emily Henry's previous book, Beach Read, but this one didn't really grab me。 It's a pleasant read, but it felt like the plot was a bit thin。 It's the story of Poppy and Alex, who meet in college and initially don't hit it off, but eventually become best friends after a long shared drive home at the end of their freshman year。 After college, they go their separate ways but maintain their bond through annual summer trips。 But when the book opens they haven't seen or spoken to each I really enjoyed Emily Henry's previous book, Beach Read, but this one didn't really grab me。 It's a pleasant read, but it felt like the plot was a bit thin。 It's the story of Poppy and Alex, who meet in college and initially don't hit it off, but eventually become best friends after a long shared drive home at the end of their freshman year。 After college, they go their separate ways but maintain their bond through annual summer trips。 But when the book opens they haven't seen or spoken to each other in two years, after something happened on their last trip。 Now, Poppy has realized how much she misses Alex and contacts him to see if he wants to join her for a last-minute trip。 They end up spending a week in Palm Springs in the height of summer, in an AirBnB with broken air conditioning。 Chapters alternate between the Palm Springs trip in the present and previous trips that Poppy and Alex have taken together in the past。I enjoyed many of Poppy and Alex's travel adventures, but the story dragged on a bit。 It was clear early on that they were in love with each other, and there really didn't seem to be any major obstacles to their being together, apart from, I guess, being afraid of ruining their friendship。 There were lots of sort-of cryptic references to what had happened on their last trip to drive them apart, but when the "big reveal" finally happens, it's kind of an anticlimax。The whole story is told in the first-person present tense, with Poppy as the narrator。 I'm not a big fan of present tense stories, but it particularly bugs me when there's a first-person narrator, since it just feels odd to have someone telling a story as it happens。 It might have worked better if only the present-day chapters had been in the present tense, but Henry has chosen to have Poppy narrate the chapters about past trips in the present tense as well, which didn't really work for me。 Among the things I did like were several of the secondary characters, including Poppy's boss, Swapna, and loved Alex's exuberant brother David。 Overall, I ended up feeling lukewarm about this book, but I'll still be keeping an eye out for future Emily Henry books。 。。。more

Upon first meeting 12 summers ago, Poppy and Alex strongly dislike each other and would never estimate how much their lives and friendship would change 12 summers later。 The unlikely pair develop a strong friendship as every summer they go on vacation together。 It wasn’t until a vacation to Croatia where things got heated and slowed their friendship right down。 Now Poppy is determined to rekindle what they had with the quest of one final vacation together。I have thought a lot about how to struct Upon first meeting 12 summers ago, Poppy and Alex strongly dislike each other and would never estimate how much their lives and friendship would change 12 summers later。 The unlikely pair develop a strong friendship as every summer they go on vacation together。 It wasn’t until a vacation to Croatia where things got heated and slowed their friendship right down。 Now Poppy is determined to rekindle what they had with the quest of one final vacation together。I have thought a lot about how to structure this review because there was a lot I loved about this book and I thought the best way to start is from the cover。 As soon as I received this e-ARC I knew I would love it。 The cover is absolutely gorgeous and colourful。 When the book is released I am definitely going to be purchasing a physical copy to add to my bookshelf。 And just like the cover, the story is so bright and colourful with some really descriptive worldbuilding surrounding the characters’ vacations。 I really loved how Henry transported us from multiple places and I really felt like they were all different – be that in Vancouver or the atmospheric BAR。 Right from the prologue I was hooked。 Henry’s witty and charming writing allows for the plot to be easily followed and provide a constant nostalgic feeling。 Perhaps reading this in a time of a global pandemic has allowed me to appreciate the descriptions of places and social interactions, but also the flashbacks to many summers ago aids this。The narrative is anecdotal with loosely alternating chapters of present day and the past。 This is a technical and clever choice by Henry to evoke a simultaneous storyline。 The reader learn about Alex and Poppy’s first meeting, while also reading where they are presently。 There are some really clever choices used with the flashbacks mirroring the next present day chapter。 It appears that during both stages of their lives they repressed their romantic emotions for each other and that long-standing emotion provides a more powerful and intense connection。 However, this does cause for a rollercoaster of emotions。The chemistry between Alex and Poppy is never lost。 Their love for each other radiates through every page and causes the reader to grow impatient。 I know I started to get impatient with them and just wanted the pair to get together because Henry’s beautiful talent forced me to get so invested in them。 From the prologue I was rooting for the pair but as the story started I had no idea where it was going to go considering they had lost touch。 I enjoyed reading their reconnection。 It felt like their wasn’t a dormant part of their friendship and could pick up straight away where they left it。 This proves how much of a special connection they have。 They both remember small details about each other and this provides a very caring atmosphere。 An example which really stuck with me was when Alex wouldn’t let Poppy sleep on the pull out chair due to a potential migraine。 It is these small, thoughtful details that made my heart flutter。 I also found their heated discussion over Tinder humourous。The characters of Poppy and Alex were very unique to read and Henry hasn’t made their characteristics predictable。 I like how she captured the complexity of love, friendship, and commitment。 The difficulties in accepting and revealing true feelings。 The honest account also allows for more truth to be explored with Poppy and her job。 She has achieved her dream, yet, it was not how she thought。 Henry writes how this is OK and reminds the reader that expectations aren’t always met。 With this in mind, I especially enjoyed the character of Rachel。 As the reader guide at the end of the book stated ‘Rachel has a lot to say about contentment versus purpose’ and that provided a strong underlying message and theme – and is surely something I am going to consider more often, hoping to answer whether both can be achieved or if they are mutually exclusive as the guide questioned。Overall, I absolutely loved this read and I am excited to pick up more books by Henry。 This is the first I have read of this author and am quite excited to read more。Thank you Penguin General for a gifted copy of You and Me on Vacation in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Ugh。 These two are nuts for each other。 Despite the years, relationships and miles that separate them, they clearly mean so much to one another。 I felt my chest low-key aching for them to just tell one another how they felt, but the writing was so good I could not stop reading。⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I loved Beach Read, and I think this is another book that elevates a romantic story to literary fiction。 Their backstories made them who they are, and I loved how their needs changed as they grew from college kids to young adults。 Great story! 10/10 would recommend。⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Things I loved:⛱ Friends to lovers romance⛱ Complex backstories and family dynamics⛱ Wacky travel adventures⛱ Realizing you need and accepting help 。。。more

An enjoyable rom-com type。 Was the perfect book to read by the pool while I was in Palm Springs。

I got whiplash from all the time jumps! It was also too long/repetitive, and this made the pacing off for me。 Also。。。。 I wish the main female lead was。。。。 less basic?

The question is, though, will Poppy and Alex eventually find that out for themselves? The book is told across a period of twelve years。 It flicks between the present and past summer holidays, weaving the tale of Poppy and Alex's friendship - and the start of something more。 Spanning multiple countries and cities as well as just years, this could easily be confusing, but it works extremely well。This is a sweet story filled with enviable travel destinations and colourful characters。 From a luxurious Tuscan villa to a questionable Canadian water taxi ride, this book follows Poppy and Alex all over the globe。 In a time when overseas travel is not possible, living vicariously through their adventures definitely helps to scratch the itch! This is a gorgeous, light read ideal for summer reading。 I defy anyone not to root for Poppy and Alex! 。。。more

i read it so quickly that i am really mad at myself, and it has become one of my favorites。 emily henry has done it again, she had me crying and laughing hysterically repeatedly and it was one of the most beautiful books i have ever read。 i cannot wait for her upcoming work, because i am certain it will destroy me and heal me as the others have done。 5/5

Again - perhaps a victim of circumstance。 I read this one after a thriller with many unexpected ups and downs。 This one was a little more predictable, but it was just what I needed。 I adored every page - especially the last half。 Read this one for an enjoyable book about travel with a friends to lovers trope。

Reading this book left me with feelings that are the equivalent of watching a few episodes of Girlmore Girls - my heart felt warm, soft and gooey all over。 This book was everything I was looking for and more。 This was a highly anticipated read for me and boy did it not dissapoint。 This story perfectly captures the essence of what it feels like to be 100% accepted by somebody, when you can just spill your guts to one another and no amount of distance can affect your connection。I love the way the Reading this book left me with feelings that are the equivalent of watching a few episodes of Girlmore Girls - my heart felt warm, soft and gooey all over。 This book was everything I was looking for and more。 This was a highly anticipated read for me and boy did it not dissapoint。 This story perfectly captures the essence of what it feels like to be 100% accepted by somebody, when you can just spill your guts to one another and no amount of distance can affect your connection。I love the way the relationship between Poppy and Alex played out, how both of them had to overcome their own underlying struggles to come together and how they became more and more self-aware as the book progressed。 In a way the most important part of the book was not them discovering each other, but themselves。 I really appreciate how realistically and in a mature way the book portrayed the issues of finding your identifying and communication in relationships (however the lack of communication after the Croatian trip bothered me a bit and seemed slightly unrealistic)。Poppy’s character really resonated with me and I was constantly highlighting different quotes from the book。 Another huge plus for me is the way Alex talked about the different love that he felt for Poppy and for Sarah, this fragment was so beautiful and mature。 The one thing that bothers me in various romances and I also found slightly bothered me in this book, is that it’s almost always the male characters that are described as being fit and athletic, whereas the women are not so much so and tend to like eating all things sweet etc。 (can’t help but also think of „The hating game” here and many others)。 But that is a slight issue。 。。。more
